Practical Review: Electrolysis
Electrolysis is the decomposition of an ionic compound, molten or in aqueous solution, using electricity. In practical questions, you must identify the apparatus, electrodes, electrolyte, ions present, products formed, safety precautions and ways to improve accuracy.
Key ATP reminders
| Practical feature | What to write |
|---|---|
| Independent variable | The factor deliberately changed, such as electrolyte concentration, voltage, time, or electrode material. |
| Dependent variable | The measured outcome, such as mass of metal deposited, volume of gas collected, or observation at an electrode. |
| Control variables | Keep temperature, time, volume of electrolyte, electrode distance, electrode surface area, and current/voltage constant where appropriate. |
| Safety | Wear goggles; avoid inhaling gases; do not touch electrodes during operation; handle copper sulfate and acids carefully. |
