AP Biology Unit 1.1–1.2: Water & Elements of Life
Syllabus alignment: official course/syllabus source.
Learning targets
- Explain how polarity and hydrogen bonding produce emergent properties of water.
- Connect carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur to biological molecules.
- Construct evidence-based AP-style explanations.
1 · Water: cause → property → biological consequence
Cohesion
Hydrogen bonds between water molecules support surface tension and continuous water columns.
Adhesion
Attraction to other polar surfaces contributes to capillary action.
Thermal stability
High specific heat buffers rapid temperature change.
Solvent behavior
Polarity allows water to surround ions and polar solutes.
2 · Elements of life
C forms diverse carbon skeletons; N occurs in amino groups and nitrogenous bases; P occurs in ATP, nucleotides and phospholipids; S occurs in some amino acids and can contribute to protein structure.
AP response habit: name the molecular interaction first, then the property, then the biological effect.
Watch and focus
Pause after each major idea and write one sentence linking the visual evidence to the lesson objective.
Quick check
Exam-style practice
FRQ. A plant experiences a sudden increase in air temperature. Explain how one property of water can reduce the rate at which leaf-cell temperature changes. [Conceptual analysis]
